September 8th, Ralph Smith had invited us to his church, Solid Rock Christian Fellowship Center (although an urgent family need prevented Ralph from joining us). Jim
accompanied us to enjoy the wonderful spiritual music and a sermon on love,
given by Pastor Zedell Jackson. His sermon seemed written for the Peace
Journey; his point was compassion is better than judgment, his words included
forgiveness and restoration as alternatives to exclusion and retribution. He
was addressing everyday life, but it spoke to our issue of ending the Death
Penalty.
Following church service, we had many positive conversations
about ending the Death Penalty with attendees, including Ralph’s cousin, Tawn,
for at least an hour.
The Peace Journey went walking in Walla Walla after
attending Solid Rock church service.
That evening, Jim and Jan made Paella, served with
Caprese salad, eaten on their back porch. After dinner we gathered around the
fire pit with a few neighbors, roasting marshmallows and continuing the
conversation.
